To get through San Jose the best thing to do is to ask your car rental agency or hotel for directions to Route 32 to Limon. You can also hale a cab driver and ask to follow them to Route 32 for $10. This will save you a lot of time if you get lost instead of driving around.

Take Route 32 out of San Jose for about 3 hours to the city of Limon. Before you get to Limon you will see a sign for Route 36 to Puerto Viejo.

Turn right on Route 36 and travel for about 45 minutes until you come to a “Y” in the road. Route 36 turns to the right and a sign will direct you straight to Puerto Viejo. Take this road for about 10 minutes until you see the ocean straight ahead.

You will drive through downtown Puerto Viejo and continue along the coastal road for 1 kilometre more until you see Cabinas El Tesoro on the right. We have secure parking.

A 4WD vehicle is not necessary to reach us but you might appreciate it when exploring the area if you get off the beaten track.

Detailed driving directions for the route to Puerto Viejo including an alternative route are available here.

Public Bus

By direct public bus: leaves daily from Terminal del Caribe at 8 am, 10 am, 12 noon, 2 pm & 4 pm. The bus trip from San Jose takes 4 to 5 hours. Cost is about $9. Full information on the bus and schedules can be found on the transport page on www.PuertoViejoSatellite.com which also has a wealth of local information on the area.

Except for the 12 noon departure the services only go as far as downtown Puerto Viejo so you'll need to get the last 1 km to Cabinas El Tesoro by taxi (about 1,500 colones or $3) or by foot.  Please keep careful watch on your belongings while the bus is unloading luggage in Puerto Viejo.  For leaving Puerto Viejo you should try and purchase your ticket in advance at the office in downtown Puerto Viejo.

The noon departure from San Jose continues along the coastal road to Manzanillo so goes right by Cabinas El Tesoro but you should confirm (the drivers do not generally speak any English) with the driver before you leave Puerto Viejo that he will drop you at Cabinas El Tesoro at Playa Cocles.  It might be easier just to get off downtown where everyone else is getting off.

Shared Ride Shuttle / Minibus

Shuttle door to door service: Interbus and several other shuttle companies operating on a scheduled minibus service with A/C which will pick you up in San Jose or Arenal (right from your hotel) and bring you directly here. Rates start at about $35 per person (a little more from Arenal and always half price for kids) and must be booked in advance.

You can also have a private driver make this trip for you. The cost is $190 from San Jose for up to 8 persons and they will go on your schedule at your convenience. They will also meet your flight at the international airport and bring you straight here. Or you can book point-to-point transport from any point in Costa Rica. Use the transport planner to book this service.

Coming from San Jose International Airport

If you want to come directly from your flight at the San Jose International airport to Puerto Viejo, we recommend either a private driver or getting your bus ticket in advance. You can do the latter with the taxi/bus service - the driver meets your flight at the San Jose airport and has already pre-purchased your tickets for your selected bus departure. Use the transport planner to book this service. The shuttle services generally leave San Jose to early to meet international incoming flights.
