At Cabinas El Tesoro about 1km from Puerto Viejo, 11 simply furnished rooms have orthopedic mattresses, screened windows, fans and private baths with hot water, plus hammocks on patios. There's also a his-and-hers surf dorm at the back, with a communal kitchen, toilets, and showers. Three more upscale rooms have earth-tone stucco, cross-ventilation, cable TV, refrigerators, and large walk-in showers; two have air-conditioning. It's run by a friendly in-the-know American, Charlie Wanger. There's free internet, coffee and parking.

In a town flooded with extremely low end and extremely high end accommodations around every corner El Tesoro is a great find!
I paid as much for a cabin with private bath, room service, and towel service as the local hostels that offer none of these services charge. I had my own little front porch with a hammock and felt like I was staying in my own little home. The location was perfect for me... just outside of the loud part of town, i could hear the sounds of the rainforest at night while being within walking distance of downtown and also across the street from the beach.
The staff was super friendly and Charlie the manager treated me like family and even helped me get to the airport when my shuttle didn't show up leaving me stranded.
A place as special as Puerto Viejo itself... I can't wait to go back.
After walking nearly 2 kilometers, and stopping several times along the way we found El Tesoro to have the best deal for the money and we got a private room as well.
Only 100 meters to the beach break we were at it every day.
There were other places with similar prices - but none of them offered a quiet place to rest and/or read.
Great restaurant / bar although wish they were open for breakfast (1:00pm to 12:00 midnight daily)
Free coffee, wifi with super high speed (need your own laptop)
The staff was very helpful and accommodating.
